Appearance
Shark with big, green eyes and a moderately long snout. Two dorsal fins with large spines. Moderately long and broad snout. First dorsal fin fairly short (base) and high. Free rear tips of pectoral fins strongly extended. No anal fin.
Coloration
Greyish-black.
Distribution
Eastern Atlantic: Portugal, Senegal, Ivory Coast to Nigeria. Western Indian Ocean: South Africa to Mozambique. Western Pacific: Off Taiwan.
Biology
Lives preferably in deep water, usually on or near the bottom at depths between 100 m and 1200 m.
Diet
Feeds on fishes such as hakes, lanternfishes etc., squids and small dogfishes.
Size
Maximum total length about 150 cm, average size between 100 cm and 130 cm.
Reproduction
Aplacental viviparous (ovoviviparous). 1 to 6 pups per litter. Size at birth about 35 cm. Males reach sexual maturity between 70 cm and 130 cm, females between 90 cm and 145 cm.
Similar Species
Some similar species and taxonomic features have to be used to clearly distinguish between the species.
