Huge, lollipop-shaped head. Gill slits enlarged. Two equal-sized dorsal fins. Origin of first dorsal fin over pectoral fins. Very soft body.
Coloration
Light to dark brown, conspicuous color pattern.
Distribution
Eastern Pacific: Southern Baja California, California, Mexico. Peru and Chile.
Biology
Little-known, small shark of the upper continental slopes, lives preferably between 150 m and 900 m depth. The enlarged head (gill area) indicates that this shark may live in low oxygen environments.
Diet
Invertebrates.
Size
Up to about 30 cm.
Reproduction
Oviparous (egg laying). Size at birth about 10 cm. Size at maturity about 20 cm.
