Very slender, small shark. Nicitating membrane present. Two equal-sized dorsal fins. The position of the first dorsal fin is closer to the pelvic fins than to the pectorals. Very slender caudal fin.
Coloration
Light grey, with dark stripes over the caudal fin.
Distribution
Western Atlantic: Between Cuba and Florida.
Biology
Abundant. Lives close to the bottom on upper slopes of the continental shelf down to a depth of about 600 m.
Diet
Small fishes, crustaceans and cephalopods.
Size
Average size about 25 cm to 30 cm, total maximum length about 35 cm.
Reproduction
Aplacental viviparous (ovoviviparous). Two pups per litter. Males reach sexual maturity at approximately 27 cm, females at 28 cm.
Similar Species
Some species of the same genus have a similar appearance but differ in color pattern and distribution.
