Appearance
Small, with a somewhat flattened snout. Spiracles present. Origin of the very small first dorsal fin is more posterior on back and well behind the pectoral fins. Second dorsal fin is slightly larger than the first one. Small lateral or midventral keels on caudal peduncle. No anal fin.
Coloration
Uniformly dark brown, no conspicuous markings.
Distribution
Only known from the type area where the animal was found on which this description is based. Western Pacific: New Zealand. A wider range is possible.

Size
At least 80 cm.
Reproduction
Probably aplacental viviparous (ovoviviparous).
Similar Species
Similar to Smallmouth velvet dogfish that ossesses small dorsal fin spines. Similar to Whitetail dogfish that species has a white colored tail.
