Appearance
Bulky, with a long, bulbously conical snout. Large eyes, without nictitating membrane. Prominent teeth. Mouth is extending behind the eyes. Origin of first dorsal fin over the rear ends of the pectoral fins. Second dorsal fin over the pelvic fins (over the first thirds of its bases). Low and long anal fin. Precaudal pit present (a feature that is mostly present in requiem sharks and hammerheads).
Coloration
Uniform chocolate brown, without spots.
Distribution
Western Atlantic: Brazil. Eastern Atlantic: Madeira. Western Indian Ocean: Possibly in the area of the Seychelles.
Biology
A little-known deepwater shark. Prefers to live in greater depth between 600 m and 1000 m, over the continental shelves and slopes.
Diet
Unknown.
Size
Average size probably around 250 cm and 300 cm, maximum total length about 360 cm.
Reproduction
Unknown, probably aplacental viviparous (ovoviviparous).
Similar Species
Other sandtiger sharks have a similar appearance and taxonomic features have to be used to clearly differ.
