Long body. Snout relatively short, thick and broadly rounded. Narrow head, with slitlike eyes. No barbles on throat. Two equal-sized dorsal fins. Origin of first dorsal fin over the end of the free rear ends of the pelvic fins. Origin of the second dorsal fin over the insertion of the anal fin.
Coloration
Grey-brown, with six dusky saddles on trunk, peduncle, and tail. An inconspicuous collar marking in the gill area formed of three to four dark spots. Large dark brown spots scattered over entire body.
Distribution
Western South Pacific: Australia (Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania).
Biology
Common, over the continental shelf, on or near the bottom between about 35 and 55 m. Its biology is little known.
Diet
Feeds most likely on invertebrates.
Size
Maximum size at least 75 cm.
Reproduction
Most likely oviparous (egg laying). Hatching size about 17 cm.
Similar Species
The color pattern of this species is very distinctive.
