Relatively slender body, with trunk tapering slightly toward the head. Moderately long snout, broad and bell-shaped (preoral snout about 10 to 11 % of total body length). Short gill slits, much smaller than eye diameter. Broad nostrils (incurrent and excurrent apertures very large and oval). Base of second dorsal fin about 1.2 times of the first one. Origin of first dorsal fin opposite second half of pelvic fin bases. Insertion (end) of second dorsal fin slightly in front of anal fin insertion. Pectoral fins rather small. Pelvic fins low. Fairly short anal fin, high and angular (about four times as long as high).

Light grey to brown upper body, whitish ventral surface.
Distribution
Western North Pacific: Japan (Honshu), China.
Biology
Lives in deepwater, close to or at the bottom.

Maximum size about 66 cm.
Reproduction
Egg laying (oviparous). Possibly a single egg per oviduct.
Similar Species
Other species of the same genus (Apristurus) have a similar appearance but no others live in the same area.
