Relatively slender body, with a trunk that tapers slightly towards the head. Very broad and long, bell-shaped snout, (preoral snout about 7 to 8 % of total body length). Fairly broad nostrils. Very small eyes (about 2.4 to 3 % of total body length). Gill slits moderately large. Base of first dorsal fin about the same size as the second one. Origin of first dorsal fin over second half of pelvic fins. Insertion of second dorsal fin in front of the anal fin insertion. Pectoral fins of moderate size. Long anal fin (about 2.5 to 3 times longer than high) and rounded.

Blackish-brown.

Eastern Pacific: Off Japan (Chiba, Honshu).

Supposedly abundant in deepwater, bottom living. Poorly known.

Maximum size unknown but at least 70 cm.

Oviparous (egg laying).
Similar Species
Other species of the same genus (Apristurus) have a similar appearance and taxonomic features have to be used to clearly distinguish among them.
