November 21, 2021: After 4 years of hard fighting and lobbying for the protection of the North Atlantic shortfin makos, ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) finally decided at their annual meeting to reduce the mortality rate of makos to a maximum of 250 tons per year. This should allow the mako populations to recover by 2070 (!).
The ban is the core of a long-term international plan to rebuild the world's critically endangered mako populations.
